Coming back from vacation is always hard. It’s been especially hard to come back from Iceland. I spent the week touring a country so beautiful, it literally sparkles. And the people I met, from my Trek Travel guides and fellow riders, to the locals I interacted with, were simply amazing. My heart feels full, but I left a small piece of it there. I will be back to retrieve it someday soon. In the meantime, GO see this place for yourself. It’s worth paying $12 for a beer.

Last day in Iceland: Horses, Aunt Nancy’s cracked ribs and staying out all night long in Reykjavik. What a place! What people! What a week. I wish I could stay one more.

Iceland day 7: Tired, dirty, happy. Rode 15 miles through a lava field, ate lunch in a sheep herders hut, rinsed off the mud and soaked in a hot tub with a view of a waterfall, and drank a little too much vodka. Again. Can I stay another week?

Iceland Day 6: I didn’t die! We biked to the top of a cliff and rode along its edge. Contrary to my expectations, I managed to keep the shiny side up the entire time. We hung out with cliff-side sheep, sat on a beautiful black sand beach and battled gale-force winds. A dip in the local pool and some vodka shots rounded out the day nicely.

Iceland day 5: What an assault on the senses. We saw three waterfalls, all of which were the largest and tallest I’ve ever seen. We saw active geysers and geothermal pools. We then hiked to the top of a ridge to get a good look at the glacier. The southern coast is dotted with little Lutheran churches, farms, villages and waterfalls pressed up against impossibly green mountains. Bury my heart here.

Day 4 in Iceland: We explored the space between the North American and European tectonic plates, biked some refreshingly doable single track and hiked in search of natural hot springs. My perpetually sunburned nose is not at all complaining about the unusually warm and sunny weather we’ve been having.
